Sissy Punch
Female empowerment. For myself, the more powerful, the sexier. Don’t get me wrong. This is not objectification (maybe a little) but more of a compliment to women who acknowledge that strength derives more from genitalia. Yes, men are naturally stronger, it’s in the DNA, no refuting. However, where is it written that a woman has to look like a “woman” or “weak” to appeal more to the populace belief of what is pretty.
Here’s looking at you Shailene Woodley. I had no problem with her casting as Tris for the Divergent franchise; she’s an excellent choice for someone who could bring (or has brought) the emotional gravitas to the Abnegation fish out of water story. Following in the shadow of Jennifer Lawerence’s Katniss portrayal is tricky but not impossible. Alas, we continue the attempts. Shiane has the grit, but the trick relies in the deception. Can you make the audience believe you are this character some of us already know. The hope with many of these recent adaptations is that the existing product (book ) will help the film draw more of an audience i.e. Harry Potter which was casted perfectly in comparison to Twilight that experienced a huge outcry when rob and Kristen were introduced as Bella and Edward. Based on the popularity of the books, the casting be damned, the movies soared to exponentially box office heights. Divergent isn’t as popular as the Twilight or Hunger Games books so pleasing movies goers should not be too difficult. Just entertain them; we’re usually quite oblivious.
