I’m So Indie You: Chiddy Bang’s Breakfast

Chiddy Bang was introduced to me by my fellow podcaster, Adam. After I spoke to him about scouring the web and finding the Canadian group Alvvays, he gave me his phone on which played a music video of two guys with super-imposed heads riding skateboards. I immediately acknowledged the beats as infectious and hard to ignore. The song was Mind Your Manners off of their 2012 album Breakfast. So I says to Mighty Mouse, I am so indie this group. Okay, it was as dramatic as that last proclamation, but I did like the vibes received by listening to this mixed race duo from Philly. So I went home that evening and downloaded their more recent album from iTunes.

Breakfast is just that, a precursor meal to begin the day. It will have you up and shaking dat ass while mowing down a bowl full of fruit loops. With lighthearted beats overlaid with chorused vocals, each song represents rap music of the heyday: great rhymes and having fun time. But as you proceed to work or whatever and your day grows worse, you may want to have this album playing on your commute home. Every song was too ā€“ dare I say ā€“ precious. I wanted more grit for my buck and not because Iā€™m warped by the music today. Hell, I listen to Drake. I only wanted more from Chidera “Chiddy” Anamege who showcases superb rap skills with not much to say. Since the release of Breakfast, Chiddy Bang has disbanded; Chiddy to become a solo artist and Noah “Xaphoon Jones” Beresin a produce, so this review is pretty much irreverent. However, if you need that breakfast pick me up, skip the Fruit Loops and have and have an instead apple with a play of Breakfast and dance your morning into wakefulness with some good get-on-your-feet nineties, like, hip-hop grooves.
