As with All mythos and time. Stories told of old change with every iteration each one taking one aspect from the other construing newer sometimes more gracious tale. This version of Hercules is a red garment mixed into a load of whites, taking the myth of the demigod son of Zeus and transforming him into a more humane legend.
Based on a the comic book I have never read, this version of Hercules does not stand alone but fights with a team of warriors, a prophet, and a soothsayer. He is a father and a mercenary whose name precedes him in battle. Run and beware of the great almighty Hercules played by Dwayne Johnson (who looks more like Conan). His loyal followers are key to keeping the legend alive in the hearts and fears of nations and also with maintaining the plots relevance for this movie.
Johnson has a great screen presence, always professional and faithful to the craft of acting, and although he is top-billed, he does not allow for his muscular frame to overshadow the supporting cast. With a veteran actor like Ian McShane and a skilled performance from Rufus Sewell ( yes, you know that guy whose been in that thing) Hercules shapes up to be not the movie about the legend you know but the legend as told by the great teller of tales Hollywood.
