The Maze Runner – Review

Movie Review: The Maze Runner

Everything is going to change. Anyone familiar with the book, The Maze Runner, understands the meaning and importance of this phrase. Everything did change with this adaptation of the popular YA novel by James Dasher. However, it wasn’t horrible. The changes made were in concert to the plot and progression of the storyline without the use of too much exposition.

I don’t watch Teen Wolf (the television series, not the M.J. Fox greatness) but this Stiles kid, Dylan O’Brian was the perfect choice for the main character, Thomas. He possesses the emotional dept to carry this role into the Scorch Trials and hopefully the last book, The Death Cure. I even thought the little Chunk kid (his name is actually Chuck) was just the right amount of innocent pudge I pictured in the story. Unfortunately I couldn’t help picturing Chunk from the Goonies and how they should remake that movie if only to put this kid in it. The remainder of the cast was seemingly accurate save for the Gannon character who changed the most from the translation from book to screen; he wasn’t as much an a-hole and you’re even led to feel sorry of the guy.

The studio greenlit the sequel sometime ago and are casting some notable actors for the sequel’s key characters. Judging by how well they did putting the spin on this book, the Scorch Trials should be as enjoyable if not better. And on another note, strap a cam on those kids and give us some dizzying, claustrophobic maze running. No shaky no though–video game POV will suffice. There’s need to have the YA crowd up-chucking all over the theater because I personally may have to clean it up.
